Reef Infra developed C-Fix together with Shell Global Solutions. C-Fix has properties that lie somewhere between asphalt and concrete. It is extremely strong, flexible, tear-resistant, waterproof and resistant to acids and salts. It can also be put into operation soon after it has hardened, which saves time. Perhaps even more important is the fact that C-Fix is a binding agent made from high-carbon petroleum fractions. These fractions are used in heavy heating oils, generating relatively high CO2 emissions when used as a fuel. Using these heavy refining fractions in the C-Fix binding agent prevents many CO2 emissions because the carbon, and therefore also the CO2, are retained. In concrete terms, this means that when paving a bus lane, for example, or an industrial site, the owner can acquire a CO2 certificate indicating the tonnage of the CO2 contained in the pavement. In time, these certificates will acquire economic value and play a role in the CO2 emission trading that the authorities are currently developing.
