Busan-Geoje Fixed Link

The immersion tunnel is part of the Busan-Geoje Fixed Link
– an extraordinary project that helps resolve a significant economic and social issue. By means of two cable-stayed bridges spanning 475 metres and 2 x 230 metres respectively, and a 3.2-kilometre immersion tunnel, the project as a whole – which has an investment value of 1.5 billion euros – connects South Korea’s ‘second’ capital to the peninsula of Geoje.

The contract amount for the immersion operation is 70 million euros, which constitutes a major contract for Mergor. The immersion operation was performed at the behest of Daewoo Engineering & Construction, which is part of the PPS Consortium for the project, GX Fixed Link Corporation.

Over a period of three years, the Mergor/Geocon team installed a total of 18 tunnel units, each of 180 metres in length. The deepest of these units was placed approximately 60 metres below sea level, which is exceptionally deep for an immersion tunnel.

Book ConnectingDreams - 160 feet below sea level in South Korea
ConnectingDreams tells the story of a unique operation: the immersion of one of the deepest en longest immersed tunnels in the world by the Netherlands-based company Strukton Afzinktechnieken 'Mergor'. The nautical conditions under which the work was to be completed, the tight deadlines to avoid typhoons, and the innovations used all transformed the project into an excited and unprecedented 'Star Wars at Sea'. Still, this book is about more than planning and technology alone: it is a tribute to the things human beings can achieve together if they are open to each other, their passions, and their dreams.
