Strukton nominated in four categories for the 2013 International Tunnelling Awards

The jury of the International Tunnelling Awards has nominated Strukton Civiel in four categories for its ‘Metrostation CS’ project – one of the key stops along Amsterdam’s new North-South Line.

The International Tunnelling Awards is an initiative of the trade publications New Civil Engineer and Ground Engineering and is endorsed by the International Tunnelling & Underground Space Association.

Strukton has been nominated in the following categories:

  1. The Specialist Tunnelling Project of the Year
  2. The Young Tunneller of the Year
  3. The Tunnelling Project of the Year (up to USD 500m)
  4. The Ground Investigation and Monitoring Award

About the Awards

The International Tunnelling Awards have been set up to recognise operational excellence in the field of underground construction, in which factors like client empathy, budget, planning, geological conditions and project size frequently play a complicating role. Entries for this year’s International Tunnelling Awards came from both Europe and the US. The winners will be announced in London on 26 November 2013.

The ‘Metrostation CS’ project

Deep below Amsterdam’s monumental Central Station, the Strukton/Van Oord consortium has been busy working on a section and underground station for the new North-South Line. This underground line will connect the city’s historic centre with districts in North and South Amsterdam. To ensure that the North-South Line connects effectively to Amsterdam Central Station, Strukton/Van Oord has constructed a new underground station deep below the square in front of the station hall: ‘Metrostation CS’. The contractors started by erecting a roof structure over the building site, so that inconvenience for travellers in and around Amsterdam CS was kept to a minimum during construction and excavation work. They then made room for the North-South Line tunnel section that runs directly under Amsterdam CS’s station hall. As this section replaces part of the station hall’s existing foundations, the contractors have constructed an extra layer of steel pipes that bear a large share of the load previously borne by the old foundations.
