Sustainable Energy

The growing demand for sustainable energy is something we consider both unmistakable and inevitable. Ambitions are also growing. The current issue is not so much one of will, but of action. In concrete terms, making green energy a viable reality. Strukton Sustainable Energy, the Strukton business unit which focusses on the development, realisation and maintenance of related sustainable offshore and onshore energy sources, has the capacity to achieve this – all over the world.

Tidal Power Projects
In order to put words into action, we founded the specialist company Tidal Power Projects together with Dutch turbine producers Tocardo. Tidal Power Projects’ principal activity is realising tidal energy worldwide. This encompasses the supply of turbines, as well as the overall process of engineering, laying foundations and installation. In Den Oever, located in the Dutch province of North Holland, we have a tidal energy test centre.


Our spearheads:

Wave energy
Wave energy is generated by collecting the energy from surface waves. This is done using special energy converters which turn the upward and downward movements of waves into electricity. Systems of this kind can be used both on the open sea and on the coastline.

Wind energy
Wind energy occupies an important and fast-growing position on the global energy market. In 2009 its market share grew by no less than 31%. By 2014, the worldwide capacity of 200 GW as of 2010 is expected to double (source: GWEC). In wind energy projects, Strukton Sustainable Energy will be involved in installing windmills at sea and performing underwater maintenance and repairs.

Tidal energy
In short, tidal energy is a form of hydropower that converts the energy from tides into other useful forms of power. It is most effective in waters where the difference between high and low tide is several metres. At high tide the sea water is caught behind a dam, whereas at low tide it is pumped back using turbines. These geographical conditions, which are favourable for sustainable generation of energy, occur primarily on narrow coastlines. There are tens, if not hundreds, of these locations worldwide, all of which could be used to generate sustainable energy.
